THE HOUSE BUNNY

Last year when I heard that my American Idol Katharine McPhee started shooting for a film called The House Bunny I became gung-ho that time. The movie was released in the US on the last week of August this year and an eager fan like me had been patiently waiting for this film for more than two months. Our local distributor was kinda late to distribute this and I’m still pissed. At last, the wait is over and I finally saw the new Reese Witherspoon. Nope, not Katharine McPhee but the effulgent Anna Faris!

Shelley Darlingson is an orphan who grew up as an outcast. Her surprising metamorphosis has made her a famous bunny at the Playboy mansion .She has been waiting to become a centerfold spread in such a coon’s age. On her 27th birthday, she was kicked out for being too old. Subsequently, she stumbles upon a sorority house of misfits and becomes their house mother. Zeta Alpha Zeta needs thirty pledges to save their house from shutting down. The house bunny comes for the rescue.

This film is pretty comparable to Legally Blonde, Mean Girls and just recently Sydney White. This is also written by the screenwriters of Legally Blonde. So it’s inevitable not to weigh against with that colourful film. If Reese really shines in that blockbuster, Anna Farris also does the same thing. We have seen her doing numerous spoof films and she is always terrific even if the movie sucks completely. I admit that I’m a huge fan of hers. She is way too underrated. Hollywood producers must think of a dark project for her. They should give her a chance. I remember her in Brokeback Mountain with some few lines and I think she is great there. Anna Faris totally nails moments in the film with charm and she’s really funny.

The House Bunny is not a film for everyone. This is R-13 here and I totally agree. The story is way too predictable. Some scenes are way too dragging. There’s nothing original here and I feel ambivalent watching til the end. Thanks God there’s Anna Farris and Katharine McPhee. Most of the scenes are recycled from other similar films. I think I only laughed thrice. The BJ joke at the beginning is unexpected and it’s really side-splitting. Farris’ catchphrases are really enthusiastic that’s why she is perfect for the role and she’s likeable in every sceneEmma Stone is rushing most of the time but she’s a great cast. Rumer Willis’ jaw is really noticeable than her acting. Colin Hanks is good but not that promising like his father. Surprisingly, Hugh Hefner has a special role and it is hunky-dory too see him playing himself with vigor. . I’m just glad to see Katharine here as Harmony but she’s pregnant in the film and has only one unforgettable scene at the end. But wait, she is the hottest pregnant lady I’ve seen in years!

A film produced by Adam Sandler is palpably for money’s sake. Don’t expect an exhilarating cinematography but just anticipate some sexy bunnies. I enjoyed the soundtrack coz the songs are fresh and popular. It’s delightful to hear songs in the film from Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, The Ting Tings. The PCD, Metro Station, Boys Like Girls, The All American Rejects, Phantom Planet and Ingred Michaelson.

I hope one day Anna Faris will be accepting an Oscar trophy for her acting achievement. She is a talented actress not to be neglected. Oh God she’s awesome here. I want to recommend this only if you’re a fan. But for an ordinary moviegoer you may skip this in the theatre but watch this when the original DVD comes out sooner.

According to Shelley:”the eyes are the nipples of your face!. Ana Farris’s acting is the film’s fresh milk for nourishment.

RATING: 3.5 /5 *
