THE INNOCENT UNIVERSE

THE LAST MIMZY

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This family Sci-Fi film is comparable to ET. The only difference is the environmental
message of Mimzy and the classic unforgettable musical score from ET.
The kids in ET are lovable and here the two youngsters are magnificent. “Promising to be the next Haley Joel Osment & Dakota Fanning”. In my opinion.

I love the visual effects of the film. It’s like a magical trance. Your mind is being trapped in an optical illusion. Idyllic yet salient.

Mimzy? He/She/It is the cute emissary from the future. Mimzy will find you. Well, if Emma the young girl being played by Rhiannon Leigh Wryn was emotionally attached to Mimzy. I was honestly moved watching their dramatic scenes. The girl can act! Of course the other boy played by Chris O’Neil gave a delightful performance as Noah. He is Emma’s brother. These kids are amazing. Imagine them who develop super-intelligence and preternatural powers after playing with toys discovered on a beach. Sounds fascinating?

This film is well-crafted & ardently written. If you think you are a science nerd, a fortune teller, computer geek, new-age anthropologist or just an adventurous human being. You better watch this.

The twist is simply scary when you think about it.
Word to save in our head: EXTINCTION

I must warn “popcorn moviegoers”: DON’T WATCH THIS! THIS AIN’T YOUR FLICK.

“Indeed, a tear from an innocent child can save our dying universe”.
What if millions from them?

THE SPANISH HOGWARTS/NARNIA

PAN'S LABYRINTH

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Right now, this film is already included in my list of treasured films of all times.
Pan’s Labyrinth is magnificent & a perfect illusion masterpiece.

I can’t tell you the synopsis of the screenplay coz I may spoil some good things that you should see in this film. The story is a mind-blowing conundrum. Just like the enigmatic labyrinth here. It’s not so predictable.

Ever since I fell in love with Harry Potter and Narnia a bit, I’m really digging this genre now. I wish to enter our very own Filipino maze. Let’s say, “Maria Makiling’s Labyrinth. That would be awesome!!!

Let’s praise this film! Kudos to the ART DIRECTION! They won an Oscar here. I love the scenes on her 3 tasks. Totally pulchritudinous!

Hats off to the MAKE-UP! Well, according to the Academy only 3 films were outstanding last year. Apocalypto , Click & this film. No doubt they won in this category. The faun itself is remarkable.

Last award they have won was CINEMATOGRAPHY. The labyrinth was the beauty of the film. I love it!

Of course I must warn the kids to the artistic violence of this film. Be vigilant to the bloody scenes.

Director Guillermo del Toro did an immaculate job but he was snubbed by the academy. So sad! Even Y Tu Mama Tambien’s Maribel Virdu was totally shunned for Best Supporting Actress. So unfair! However, the new girl actress enthralled my heart. Ofelia played by Ivan Baquero is so pretty.

This should’ve won as BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM!

This film is kinda heartbreaking. I shed tears coz I feel nostalgic watching this.
Don’t worry you won’t sob that much.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

FLIRT, WIT, & BRIT

THE HISTORY BOYS

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For me this is so far the most promiscuous intelligent flirt discreet gay film I’ve ever seen. Whoa!!!!

The History boys are Crowther, Posner, Dakin, Timms, Akthar, Lockwood, Scripps, and Rudge 8 boys who have recently obtained some of the highest A-level scores ever at a boys' grammar school in Sheffield, and are hoping to enter Oxford or Cambridge, taking an exam in History.

I like Dakin & Posner. Dakin is the most flirtatious lad. I sort of see myself in his character. He he he! I was so amazed the way he seduced his teacher. The way he wanted to give thanks. Whew!!! I can’t breathe on those scenes. Posner too is lovable coz he is simply hilarious. I love the way he serenade Dakin during their class. So naughty! Typical confused gay teenager.

I was also surprised to see actors from Harry Potter.
The "General Studies" teacher, whom they've nicknamed "Hector" was played by Richard Griffiths, Harry’s Uncle Vernon. He has a dark secret here. His students knew it and were playing with him all along. Those were the highlights of the film .Then, Frances de la Tour is also here playing Professor Lintott another History teacher. She is Madame Maxime in Goblet of Fire. They were both nominated in BAFTA for Best Actor & Supporting Actress for their performance here.

Anyway. The History Boys is a British film. So expect deep British accents So sexy!!!!
It was adapted by Alan Bennett from his play of the same name, which won the 2005 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2006 Tony Award for Best Play. It was directed by Nicholas Hytner, who directed the original production of The History Boys at the Royal National Theatre in London, and features the original cast of the play.

Prepare to be bewitched, be bothered & be bewildered.

INCESSANTLY AMUSING

GHOST RIDER

I didn’t watch this flick on its first week here coz it received very bad reviews from the US critics. I was not cajoled the way they described it. I watched it here before the Holy Week and I was surprised with its pleasurable value.

I believe that the producers & the director didn’t intend this for the Oscar race. This is a popcorn flick. Indeed, it was entertaining for me coz I didn’t follow the comic series and I have nothing to criticize the “Marvel essence”. I just love the flow of the movie.
I didn’t find it as boring as stated by the critics.

The visual effects are awesome. This is the best thing of the flick aside from the cute actor who played the young Johnny Blaze. He is Matt Long. “Sana sa kanya na lang ito at ginawang debut film para sa kanya”. Well, Nicolas Cage was fine pero he is so overrated at fresh pa kasi sa memory natin ang kanyang atrocious film na “ The Wicker Man”. Eva Mendez is still boring as ever.

Some scenes are scary for kids maybe.

Well, just wait for the DVD. This is enjoyable while watching on the couch.

I CAN’T SWANK THAT MUCH!

THE REAPING

Hilary Swank what are you doing here?
She is a 2-time Academy award winner and she was acting just fine in this visual feast film.

The Reaping is a religion-themed horror film based on the 10 Plagues of Egypt Since, I already knew the 10 plagues, the highlights were very predictable. I almost have forty winks while watching this. The reason why I was glued to my seat is that I was expecting a scientific explanation of the modern day plagues. They started the film with that promise of showing the character of Swank explaining to students that every religious phenomenon there is a scientific explanation. So I was expecting 10 scientific explanations unfortunately I didn’t see one instead a stupid predictable twist was shown. Duh...

Anyway, I was amazed with the film’s visual effects and cinematography. They were quiet creepy. Hats off to the bloody river & the locusts.

I can’t swank that much that I love this film. It’s better if you will just read the Bible and just picture the 10 plagues in your head or just wait for the DVD and watch this next Holy Week.

BUTCHERED FANTASY

ERAGON

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I have not read the book yet but I’m planning to buy it soon.
I wasn’t that excited to watch this last January coz of mixed reviews
here on CTC and also it received poor reviews from the US critics and viewers.
So my only option was to wait for the Original DVD and borrow it.
Finally, the video is out and I watched it with no high expectations.

They were right! The movie is flawed. Bad screenplay coz of its silly dialogues. The plot moves too quickly. There is barely time to attach any momentous feelings toward any of the characters except Eragon. Some actors gave appalling performances esp. John Malkovich as the King Galbatorix. Ed Spelleers as Eragon was just fine. I think he’s handsome. Jeremy Irons was simply prominent. Rachel Weiz who gave the voice of Saphira is not persuasive to me. The musical score is forgettable. The editing is bland.
The make-up is hilarious.

Well, Eragon has something good to offer too. I must say kudos to the beautiful cinematography and compelling visual effects esp Saphira. I was so happy that the movie ended with a song from Avril Lavigne.

Enough said.
