SOMETHING WICKED IN THEIR WORLD

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES

Photobucket

WATCH THE TRAILER

When I was just a little boy my favorite fantasy adventure film that time was The Neverending Story. I enjoyed it so much because of the juxtaposition plot, fascinating creatures and the book has something to do with the magical journey. It is still my favorite until the Spiderwick Chronicles arrived in IMAX. This is so far the best I've ever seen in my entire life on Valentines Day. The film reminds me of my childhood “wicked” days in the province.

Photobucket

Book to film adaptation is sometimes suicidal in Hollywood. Book fans may despise or love the big screen version but don't worry Spiderwick fans coz this is different! This is an outlandish adaptation that you will cherish for years. The totally brought the extraordinary and enchanted beings to life.

Photobucket

From the beloved best-selling series of books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black comes “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” a fantasy adventure for the kid in all of us. Extraordinary things start to happen the moment the Grace family (Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallory and their mom) leave New York and move into the privy old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. They are unable to explicate the peculiar disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening everyday and they all blame Jared. When they investigate what’s really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and the creatures that inhabit it.

Hats off to the visual effects of the film! It's amazing to see how they immaculately animate Thimbletack the “house brownie and Hogsqueal the Hobgoblin”. These two characters are just lovable. I bet kids will cajole their parents to buy the miniature toys after seeing this film.
Midway, I almost thawed in my seat when the flower fairies were introduced, I love the emotional colors when they are fluttering.

I was also impressed how they make the dangerous goblins, the troll, Mulgarath the evil ogre and the basilisk so scary and hateful. It's a shame to admit that I was covering my mouth watching the chasing scene under the tunnel, the house attack under the full moon is really intense, and of course the wrath of Mulgarath is undeniably suspenseful.
Photobucket

We all love Freddie Highmore in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland and he nailed down this time with his amazing acting as the twins without the Brit accent. It's amazing how he lost his accent. He plays Jared the brave one who discovered the book and Simon the nerdy one but determined to overcome danger in the family. Freddie Highmore is really cute and he's growing so fast on becoming a man.
Photobucket

I would like to commend wonderful supporting roles from David Strathairn as Arthur Spiderwick, Joan Plowright as Aunt Lucinda, Sarah Bolger as the older sister Mallory, and Mary Louise Parker for playing their mom in the film.
I think the scene stealer are the voice performances from Martin Short as Thimbletack, Nick Nolte as Mulgarath and of course Seth Rogen as Hogsqueal. I highly admire Hogsqueal's great humor especially when birds are distracting him. It's really side-splitting and everyone in IMAX was laughing so loud.

Aside from the amazing visual effects, the cinematography will astound the viewers as well. Caleb Deschanel's previous job in The Passion of the Christ was eclipsed with his remarkable depiction in Spiderwick Chronicles. It's lovely and really wicked.

I'm just ambivalent about the original score. Academy Award winner James Horner (Titanic) composed the music. I love his previous material especially in “Casper”. There is a track in Casper OST called “The Lighthouse” and I'm very sure that the hook of it was also applied here in Spiderwick. I don't know if he ripped off his own score or maybe he just loved “The Lighthouse” hook so much and channeled it in his new scores .

Listen to the “THE LIGHTHOUSE” and compare.

Director Mark Waters (Mean Girls) brings out enchanting performances from his talented cast, but also creates a whole world of magical creatures in and around the mysterious Spiderwick house. It is a powerful task to make the real fit side-by-side with the surreal, but Waters accomplished it in fantastic style. Moreover, scriptwriters Karey Kirkpatrick, David Berenbaum and John Sayles deliver a tense, fast-paced and amazingly true hearted adaptation of the books. You won't be bored I guarantee.
Photobucket

This is a family fantasy film with a “heart” .This is a film that every troubled family can relate. This is a film that the characters can prove to be heroes even without wands, magic and wizards. All they need is a strong bond in the family and valor.

The IMAX experience is just wonderful even if it's not in 3D. Although too scary for very young kids, I believe this is a film that parents and their children will watch endlessly, enjoying its enchantment for many years to come.

THE DRESSES OF NETWORK WAR

Photobucket

Network War? What are you talkin' about Jish?
ahh... you mean Channel 2 & 7?
He he he... yeah 27 dresses.
Now let's forget about the war ratings coz
I will measure your size and make you 27 fabulous dresses.

I am huge fan of Katherine Heigl that's why I love Grey's Anatomy.
Since we've been watching re-runs of Grey's Anatomy due to the writer's strike I must watch something new from the Emmy Winner Ms. Heigl. Thanks God coz 27 Dresses was released so early in the Philippines.

Photobucket

Inside the cinema I already expected that female crowd will flock inside. Yeah, so right!
A lot of them were giggling. Actually, I really enjoyed the film. It's really predictable but the ending is really surprising. I didn't expect it and I was amused.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Katherine & James Marsden have a wonderful chemistry. I love them. James' eyes are sincere and he is really cute. We love him in Hairspray & Enchanted and this time you would die for him. Not really I'm just exaggerating. Katherine is Katherine. She is still the Izzy we love. She is really funny. By the way, Judy Greer who plays Gina her bestfriend is a scene stealer. She rocks!

The reason why the movie is a success is because of the story. Girls will love this. Romantic Pinoys will cherish this. Oh God we will dig this for sure. Thanks to Aline Brosh McKenna for the wonderful script. Well, she wrote The Devil Wears Prade no wonder I enjoyed this one too.

Photobucket

What can I say about the 27 Dresses.?Yeah, they're funny! I love the designs coz it's not so stylish but really humorous. Katherine tried all the dresses and I love watching her.

Photobucket

When it comes to Rom-Com films I always expect a beautiful soundtrack. I wasn't disappointed coz I heard amazing songs in the film. I almost shed tears when I heard Be Here Now by Ray LaMontagne. I was laughing so hard when they were singing in the bar the song “Bennie and the Jets” from Elton John I think the most nakaka-kilig part was when Like A Star by Corrine Bailey Rae was played and they they kissed. Some notable songs in film are Bottle It Up by Sara Bareilles, Call Me Irresponsible - Michael Buble ,Dont Stop Til You Get Enough byMichael Jackson ( this was played when she was he is running back and forth from the two weddings, Fidelity by Regina Spektor ,Hips Don't Lie by Shakira ,Love Has Fallen On Me by Chaka Khan ,Under the Influence by James Morrison ,Undiscovered by James Morrison , Unfair by Josh Kelley ,Valerie from Amy Winehouse / Mark Ronson / Dap Kings and Who Knows? by Natasha Bedingfield . But don't go lookin for the soundtrack compilation coz the last time I checked it only features Randy Edelman's original score.

Photobucket

Anyway, Valentines is coming in days. This is a perfect movie to watch!!!
Cmon grab your girl dude and take her to cinema.
27 Dresses is a must watch!!!

MONSTERRIFIC CINEMA EXPERIENCE

CLOVERFIELD

Wow!!! As in wow a million times!!!!

I was intrigued when I first saw the trailer of this untitled JJ Abrams project last year.
When it opened at #1 in the US recently with a massive debut, I just couldn't wait to watch this film.
I always see the huge billboard of Cloverfield near the Boni-MRT Station coz I work near that place.
I don't know if you also notice that there is a hidden image in the poster. It's quite creepy honestly. The monster is facing the headless Statue of Liberty like it's “ready to attack” gesture .Well, it's a clandestine effect they made with the clouds. Look closer to the clouds coz the monster is there!!!

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE MONSTER

Let's talk about the movie! I must say that this is a good experiment from JJ. I love this film!
I already heard some buzz that this film will make you dizzy. I really prepared myself. Nope I didn't drink an anti-dizzy tablet instead I just expect the anticipated shaky camera work

Photobucket

The experience is amazing. I was thrilled when the head of Liberty was thrown to the streets of Manhattan. This is it!!! The kick off of an intense and engaging monsteriffic ride!

Photobucket

Is there a story here? I think so and it's a love story too. The monster is just an extra but it plays a huge part. I was deeply attached with the main characters. I see myself in Rob (Michael Stahl-David). Naks!!!! Well, he is really good-lookin' and a natural actor. Beth (Odette Yustman) is simply pretty and hot. I love watching them. The reason why I like them is that they are not familiar actors and you get this feeling that “ hey this is happening...it's F***** real!” effect. It's like a documentary actually just like The Blair Witch Project”. Oh yeah, the only difference is that we saw the live monster here and we didn't see the witch in Blair. Cloverfield is like watching Godzilla and the 9/11 WTC attack and of course Blair Witch style altogether.

Photobucket

I don't know if I'm goin to laugh at people's reaction about this film. I'll share some comments from lovebirds sitting behind me : Ano ba yan? Nahihilo na ako” said the girl after 20 minutes in the cinema. That time I was still hunky-dory in the front row. Yeah, I love watching in the front row with popcorn!
So I think it's advisable not to sit in near the screen if you're nauseating. You know what they left the cinema in the middle. Too bad. When the end credits started rolling, I went to the john immediately to drain my pipe, I was shocked to hear that even men were affected too. I heard a teenager talking to his friend” P**** i** pare sumakit ulo ko doon! Oo nga parang rollercoaster!, the other one replied. These reactions from them are just amazing. It means that Cloverfield is a phenomenon for me.

Photobucket

SPOILERS Below:

Photobucket

I love the Brooklyn Bridge attack coz it's so intense. The subway tunnel scene with the small monsters is really frightening. The Time Warner Center apartment scene is just horrific. The Central Park scenes at the end are just gripping and engaging. I was screaming silently to be honest.. Of course kudos the people who created this monster.

Wanna see the monster? click here!

Photobucket

The only weakness in the film is that they didn't elaborate the origin of the monster that much. Actually, there are clues in the script. Just listen carefully especially at the end of the credits coz you'll hear a “cry for help” from one major character. Hint: prequel or sequel? After the explosion in the bridge at Central Park, the final scene returned to a footage in Coney Island around April. The attack happened on May 22-23.In that scene you will see an object falling from the sky into the ocean. So I think the monster is an alien. Well, let's just wait for the prequel or the sequel for the added explanation.
Watching this film twice made me see and hear the clues. Just don't close your eyes and open your ears all the time.

Photobucket

Highly recommended to all amusement ride fanatics.
Don't tell me I didn't warn you about the Cloverfield side-effects!
Good luck!

A NOT SO LACHRYMOSE CHANCE FOR ME

One More Chance

415px-omcfinalposter3

Yeah, ang One More Change ang tumabo sa takilya last year!
Sabi P152.7M ang kinita nito.Laki ano?
Bakit?
I have a friend who loves this movie kaya pinahiram niya ako ng DVD nito.
Ano raw ba masasabi ko?

Nagustuhan ko ba?
Well, ambivalent ako.

The Good:

beajohnlloyd

Wow as in wow talaga! Di nga ako fan di ba pero to the highest level ang pagkabilib ko sa kanya. Gusto ko yung break up scene nila sa basement parking. For Best Actress? Definitely!!!

one+more+chance+poster+0

The BAD:

Duh... mega corny tuloy.

Last, ang ending eh super predictable.

The story is really common. Ang walang kamatayang break-up, cry cry cry at balikan to death scenario.
Congrats sa Star Cinema for a successful film with a modest budget.
