A HISTORY LESSON FOR JISHCAND
Oh good Lord! I used to be a history buff when I was still in high school . I was also a delegate to every Quiz Bee in our district particularly in History and Gen Info. I think my memory gap is terrible now. I really forgot about Valkyrie and Hitler. Watching this new Tom Cruise film is such an astonishing experience. I learned something about history and found out that there were neglected heroes during the WW2 in Germany. Truly, Valkyrie is not just a blockbuster movie.
During World War II, Wehrmacht Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is severely wounded in Tunisia, and is evacuated home to Nazi Germany, where he is recruited by the German resistance. Their action is to assassinate Hitler and stage a coup d'etat. They plan to use the Operation Valkyrie,a national emergency plan to take control of the country. They want the world to know that not all Germans are just like Hitler.
The movie really works to a non-history buff moviegoer. If you forgot about your Nazi history then good for you! The movie is thrilling from start to end. Bryan Singer really knows how build tension in his films. He is really a brilliant director. The pace is quick and surprisingly there's a lot of suspense in the movie. I never thought that Valkyrie is a loquacious thriller. Yeah, expect a lot of yakety-yaks about political talks but these confabulations are truly intelligent.
If you're expecting an action packed film from Tom Cruise like Mission Impossible or Minority Report with deafening explosions here and there, well you won't see it here. Valkyrie is a new cinema experience. This is first for me honestly. I don't think that this is also a period drama film even if the costumes are perfectly made. Hats off to the production design as well! It feels like I'm in a war in Germany too. The editing actually helps in building the unexpected dread in the film. The only thing I fear if Valkyrie's storytelling is 100% accurate. I don't have time to delve into my old books again or Google about Führer too. To sum it all, Valkyrie is definitely favorable.
Tom Cruise is still a charming actor for me. I'm a fan and still love him here. He plays the role of Stauffenberg with passion, but in every film he does someone always steals his spotlight. In Valkyrie, few actors truly shines in their respective roles. Expect solid performances from Kenneth Branagh, Terrence Stamp, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson. Of the four, I truly like Wilkinson's acting. I must mention Cruise's supporting actor too. Jamie Parker, a handsome actor in his 20's, who portrays his adjutant ,Lieutenant Werner von Haeften . I think Parker will have serious projects in the future. He really looks familiar. I think I saw him somewhere in Smallville.
Valkyrie is indeed a stunning movie. Bryan Singer and Tom Cruise made a right decision on doing this. Stauffenberg and other few good men were absorbing heroes. After watching the film, you may feel melancholic. However, think twice about the heroic act of these men. It's truly redeeming to know that “a sacred Germany” is also a part of our world's history.
Highly recommended.
