ENIGMATIC WORLD OF THE DÆMONS

compass-06

You mean like Matt Daemon?
Just kidding.
Ha ha ha! This is better than him.

Come & explore the mysteries of this astounding world.

This film is based from the novel “Northern Lights”(UK Version) and “The Golden Compass” (US Version) and “The Gulden Combass” (Pirated DVD Version... he he he meron na ba? ). This is the first film adaption of trilogy series “His Dark Materials” written by Brit novelist Philip Pullman. I haven't read the book yet but I want to read the 3 books now after watching the film.
I also heard that there's a huge controversy about this trilogy that concerns with the church.
I am an open minded person and I believe that this is just a fantasy film.
I didn't see any offensive scenes here honestly.

The story concerns with Lyra an orphan just like Harry Potter. She has a dæmon named Pantalaimon (an animal-formed, shape shifting manifestation of her soul) and Harry Potter also has Hedwig but his owl is not a dæmon she is Harry's pet. Hey, I'm not comparing HP & TGC they're totally different.
For me Lyra is like the female version of Harry without the magic. She has the alethiometer aka the golden compass. I just love her viable character. Lyra is so valiant & charming at the same time.

Dakota Blue Richards as	Lyra Belacqua
Dakota Blue Richards' debut acting is simply remarkable. I love her! At first I thought she's the younger sister of Kate Hudson coz there's a resemblance with her. She can act honestly.

Nicole Kidman is truly the magnificent villain. Perfect choice! I love her wicked acting & of course her costumes. She plays Mrs. Coulter the head of an organization known as General Oblation Board.
She is also Lyra's secret... Twist ito ng film kasi.

Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter

Daniel Craig aka James Bond(Casino Royale) who also received a huge billing in the poster plays a minor role here as Lord Asriel. He is Lyra's adventurer uncle. He is only visible for 10 minutes I think. Hmmm... I think his character will shine in the sequel. I can't tell if he's great coz it was a short performance from him.

Daniel Craig as	Lord Asriel

Eva Green is also here as Serafina Pekkala. She is the most beautiful & sexiest queen of the witches I've ever seen so far. She also played the Bond Girl Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale by the way.
I love her eyes.

I was surprised to hear huge names who lend voices to the dæmons and the polar bears.
First we have Sir Ian McKellen aka Gandalf(LOTR) who gave a superb voice performance to a polar bear named Iorek Byrnison. He is Lyra's comrade to her journey. You see him in the trailer. Then we have Freddie Highmore aka Charlie from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Of course you knew him.
He voiced Pantalaimon. We also have Kristin Scott Thomas as the voice of Stelmaria, Lord Asriel's dæmon. Ian McShane is also here as the voice of Ragnar Sturlusson, the bear king and Iorek's greatest enemy. Kathy Bates also gave a cameo voice to a dæmon named Hester.

The substantial elements of this film are the technicals of course.
If you love the cinematography of LOTR then TGC will not disappoint you. You'll also be amazed with the production & art design. Hanep talaga sa ganda! The original music is new to me. It didn't sound like it was a rip off. Academy Award nominee Alexander Desplat's score is deeply soothing . In case you didn't know he was responsible to the music of The Queen & just recently Lust, Caution.

The film is written & directed by Chris Weitz by the way. He did American Pie & About A Boy together with his bro Paul. He did good but not as good as Peter Jackson.

The sure shot for next year's Oscar awards: BEST IN VISUAL EFFECTS & BEST SOUND.
Just my bet and my prediction too.
Please watch this on a Dolby Digital cinema coz the experience is exhilarating.
Watch out for the dæmons' animation, the flight of the witches, the sparling death of the dæmons,
& the fight of the bears coz I love those scenes.

I'm so glad that our local distributor released this simultaneously with the US & UK screening.
I don' t like waiting after the MMFF you know. Thanks CineStar!

WARNING: Please don't get mad or be disappointed if you feel “bitin” or “confused” when you realized that the film is already finished and you're hearing the theme song “Lyra” performed by Kate Bush over the end credits and you really wanted to know what happens next. Remember this is a trilogy. Let's just wait for The Subtle Knife in 2009.

Am I recommending this film? Yes!Definitely the ultimate film this Christmas season!
Watch this!
