I'm a sucker when it comes to Rom-Com. I love Hollywood rom-coms. Even if it is totally shunned by the critics I still love most of 'em. Rom-Com is my guilty pleasure.Good or semi-bad. But lately, Hollywood is giving us unforgettable rom-com/chick flicks and some of these drecks are not even rewarding. One movie this summer that suffered harsh criticisms was the recent movie starring Matthew McConaughey. Yeah, I also ignored it when it was released here in the Philippines. I think it didn't last for two weeks in the our theaters. The DVD is now available and of course I was curious to know if their adaptation of the classic tale from Charles Dickens is worth watching. I just saw the 3-D animation last week starring Jim Carrey and I loved it. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is the romantic version of “A Christmas Carol”. You know what, it's not that atrocious at all but not entirely commendable.

FILM PREMISE:
Fashion photographer Connor Mead is a disreputable womanizer, who's often dating a half dozen women at a time. When he attends his younger brother's wedding, he's reminded of the feelings he once had for his childhood sweetheart Jenny Perotti , but as he clambers those feelings, he's visited by the ghost of his womanizing mentor, Uncle Wayne , who tells his protégé to expect visits from ghosts of three of his past girlfriends who'll help clear his mind and open his heart.

The idea of adapting a romantic comedy in the universe of "A Christmas Carol" might seem like the dumbest and most obviously lazy concept premise. The movie looks like a spoof honestly right after watching the animated film from Robert Zemeckis last week. But this movie has its twists and turns too but still foreseeable from everyone. Just like most of the recent rom-coms, the movie is really predictable. However, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past ends up to be cute and charming for me. The supposed Christmas story is not here at all instead it is replaced with a more nice plot: wedding. The jokes are a little silly especially that cake trouble.Connor can simply ask for help from anyone on that situation. Well,we won't have a zany slapstick if our hero is also nifty. Connor is a “love him or hate him character” but ladies will love him in the end and in bed.

The movie is actually well-paced. There are numerous talks but the movie is not slow. The problem is the movie loses its focus on romance. The movie has no sweet moments to giggle. There is a love story but there's too much going on in the film. It's hard to root which romance is worth fighting for. The visits from the 3 ghosts are mostly impetus on Connor's restoration and awakening. The ghosts are actually hilarious. The movie somehow teaches a very good lesson. The movie actually turns out to be a family movie for me. Surprisingly, Mark Waters directs a movie with a hidden heart again.

Matthew McConaughey ,as always, is just a sizzling actor. His acting is still the same but he tries a little bit this time. His speeches are worth mentioning since he nails it down. He can tug one's heart honestly. The astonishing part is that he is fully clothed most of the time. Most of his flicks, he is always flaunting his abs and oozing pecs but he decides to be friendly with the kids this time. Jennifer Garner seems inactive this time. Her role is limited but she knows how to charm the audience with her dimples. It's a sad thing that Matt & Jen has no chemistry at all. Breckin Myer looks older than Matthew. His role is Connor's younger brother but he looks older than him. The good thing is that he shines in every scene he's in as well as Emma Stone as the Ghost of Girlfriends Past. She's funny!

Despite being predictable, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is still watchable. Our hero is one annoying Lothario but his charisma is still harmless. McConaughey can fill the entire movie with his smiles alone. No wonder he is still one of the sexiest men in the world. The only problem is that in three weeks time I may forget this movie completely. I'm not really recommending this chick flick but this is perfect movie to dawdle.
