SOARING & SOBBING

THE KITE RUNNER

The first time I heard about the filming of this beloved novel from Khaled Hosseini I was really excited to watch this on the big screen.
But I wondered if they are they going to film this in Afghanistan coz there is a situation in that country right now and it would be dicey for the American crew. Well, it’s a just an easy task for them. They used China as backdrop for Afghan settings. Isn’t it amazing? The result is astounding. There are still scenes taken from Afghanistan and it’s really wonderful to watch these splendid places.

The kite competition in the film is precise and you’ll cheer for them. You can feel an endless levitation just by watching the kites soaring up above the sky. It’s kinda soothing.

I love Marc Forster’s faithful adaptation of the book. If you love the book so much well you won’t be disappointed to watch this on the big screen. The essence is still there. Almost 90% I assume.
Marc Forster was nominated in his work with Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland but I think he won’t be nominated here. Yeah, he wasn't really noticed at all.

This film doesn’t only marvel on cinematography but the heart of the story is really uplifting.

The first half of the film tells about Amir’s childhood. In this part you’ll see the controversial rape scene of his best friend named Hassan. In the book it was detailed but Forster made sure to make it acceptable. That scene is unforgettable and really disturbing. The second half narrates Amir’s life in America as a refugee with his father and his unexpected return to Afghanistan. I must say that watching the second half is gripping ‘til the climax.

Khalid Abdalla who plays the adult Amir is what I’ve pictured from the book. He is not an Afghan but he is British born. I remember him in United 93 playing the leader of the hijacker. I like him coz he is handsome and he did well with the Dari language. The kids who played the role Amir & Hassan really gave me goose bumps. They are the real Afgha and they’re just amazing to watch on the screen coz they acted so naturally. Unfortuantely, their life is in danger right now coz of that controversial rape scene.

The music for me is truly haunting and exceptional. The score was composed by Alberto Iglesias (The Constant Gardner, Volver). I think his best compositions in the film would be the opening credits coz & the scenes where the kites are flying they sound so Middle-Eastern and very original.

This is not a film from Afghanistan. Actually, this is an American produced film with dialogue mostly in Dari, a Persian dialect spoken in Afghanistan. Don’t worry this is subtitled in English.

I really love this film.
